Use the Rounded rectangle tool to create the bean shape.

Apply the following gradient settings or use a color you like making sure the gradient is fairly balanced. (Change the angle to 90 degrees for the bean).

Other parts of the bean man have the same gradient so lets save a bit of time by saving the gradient style/setting.

Click on the arrow next to Type and click on the disk at the bottom of the box to save your gradient.
Draw two circles on either side of each other just below half of the bean.

Draw a bridge between the two circles using the Pen tool.

Select the two circles and the bridge by clicking the shapes whilst holding down the shift key. Go to Pathfinder>Merge.

Select the newly made shape of the mouth and the original bean shape. Go to Pathfinder>Minus front to cut out the mouth shape from the bean shape.

Draw a circle over the mouth area…

And apply the following gradient settings. Again remember to save it as we will be needing it for the eyes.
Then send it back to make the inside of the mouth. Right click>Arrange>Send back
Draw the bottom lip with the pen tool.
Apply the saved blue gradient style with 0 degrees so it doesn’t quite blend into the background.

To draw the eyes draw a large circle near the top of the bean.

Copy the circle and Paste in front. You will now have two circles stacked on top of each other.
Paste another circle again and place it as shown below.
We do this so that we are left with an eye ball after we use the other two circles to make the pupils.

Select two circles…
Then go to Pathfinder>Intersect.

Copy the new shape and Paste in front.
Just like the circle above Paste another one and position similarly to the example below.
Then go to Pathfinder>Intersect.

Select the white outer circle and apply the following gradient style.
Apply the blue gradient once more to the inner semi circle and the previously saved black gradient to the next inner semi circle.
Also draw a bigger circle behind the whole eye and give it the blue gradient.

Draw a smaller circle in the top right of the eye to give it a but of a glare effect and make its Opacity 30%. Duplicate the eye and position it parallel to the other eye.

Draw a circle above the mouth of the character slight past halfway.

Apply the following gradient style.

Right click>Arrange>Send Back
Send back the black circle as well to have the tongue inside the mouth where it ought to be. Draw a single thick stroke to make the tongue line.

Using the same Rounded rectangle dimensions you used for the bean itself, draw some teeth.

Group them to avoid a fuss and send them back like you did the tongue making it behind the lips.
Draw some shoes using the pen tool. Curve the top of the shoe and make the sole relatively flatter than the top.

After drawing it apply the blue gradient with a 90 degrees angle and Send it back behind the body.

Draw the arms using the Pen tool.

Now lets draw his doughnut! Draw a circle and use the pen tool to draw the icing within the circle, making sure there are no corners but curves instead.

Pick a doughnut like color from the Swatch or the color picker.

Us the pink gradient we saved before for the icing. Or whatever sorta icing you like.

Draw a circle in center of the icing and the doughnut. Copy and Paste in front .
Select one circle and the icing and go to Pathfinder>Minus front.
Select the other circle and the doughnut and go to Pathfinder>Minus front. Both the icing and the doughnut should now have a whole punched through the both of them.

Use the eraser to take a small chunk out of the doughnut. Make the bite realistic by taking out the shape of the teeth and not just a random bit.

Shrink the doughnut down to size.
To make the shadow beneath the shoes and the bean man draw shapes underneath them like so.
Fill the shapes black and Filter>Blur>Gaussian blur

And there you have it…

Other characters are very simple to make. Its only a matter of changing the gradient and add or taking away some features.
